Precious were the days of sparkling blue, which glittered in the sun.

Clear and gentle were the waves bearing us safely home.

We were content and felt no fear of poison in our run.

Naive and blissful, we went, like children pressing on.

At the sound of his song, Qeb and Thane began to calm and relax against their posts.

But not Drystan.

Drystan began to jerk harder and harder at his bindings. Somehow, he managed to work his blindfold off, revealing eyes that were an alarming amber.

All of this happened just as a creature with skin as white as the moon appeared on the side of their boat opposite Drystan. She must have been beautiful…once. Her hair was as black as her skin was white, and her eyes had no whites in them at all. When she smiled at Eirin, it was to reveal perfect, pointed teeth. Then she turned her gaze to Drystan and let out a song much louder than any they had heard before.

At the same time, several other Sirens appeared in a circle around the boat, closing in slowly as they sang. Isayas continued to boom his own song as the end of his staff began to glow yellow. He swung the staff from side to side, his song never faltering as he walked from one side of the boat to the other. But Eirin could see beads of sweat dripping down his temples, and his hands shook slightly.

He wouldn’t last much longer.

Drystan let out a snarl and swiveled his head from side to side like an animal.

“Isayas!” Eirin screamed, but it was Callispa who dropped her oar and ran to Drystan. She begged and pleaded for him to stay with them, using tones that were pleading and sweet, staring into his eyes, her face inches from his.

“Callispa!” Eirin called, letting go of the tiller. “Let me–“

“Stay there!” Callispa snapped. She turned back to Drystan, but before she could speak again, he struggled so hard to free his hands from the railing that he knocked her to the ground.

Looking stunned and confused, Isayas watched Drystan for a moment before grim determination settled on his face. Slowly, he raised his staff.

No. Isayas would not sacrifice himself this way. Eirin wouldn’t let him. After throwing down the tiller once more, Eirin stepped over Callispa to stand before Drystan. His eyes still glowed amber, a hunger in them Eirin had never seen.

“Eirin, no!” Isayas shouted.

Eirin ignored him. Instead, she took Drystan’s face in her hands, a face that was looking less and less Human by the second, and willed him to look into her eyes.

While Eirin knew less about Sirens than Callispa seemed to, and far less than Isayas, she knew how their songs worked and why they worked only on men. Their songs, though unintelligible to the female ear, were ones of seduction and temptation. They appealed to the darkest desires of the soul, charming the lusts good men did their best to subvert. They sang promises of pleasures and delight, of hopes and dreams fulfilled in the realization of those base desires.
